It Happened Again…

The Unger’s have decided to move.
                                Again.

Don’t worry, we aren’t leaving completely, just  moving to Edisto Beach.  In case you don’t know, Edisto Beach is a little community about an hour outside of Charleston, SC. You have to drive through the country to get there and where you arrive, you realize you have been transported back to the 50’s.  They have a Piggly Wiggly and a gas station on the corner, about four restaurants, and a few cute gift shops.  No Wings selling “five for five dollars” t-shirts. No McDonald's. No hotels.  It’s the perfect “family friendly” beach. That’s the official description.  Edisto Beach is my favorite place in the entire world.  That’s the real description.

I grew up vacationing at Edisto.  My Grandparent’s owned a house right on the front beach.  I remember celebrating Christmas in that house or listening to Granddaddy describe the Easter Bunny he had seen hopping down the street.  When I was little, I would fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing and dream about working as a waitress at the beach when I was old enough. (I thought being a waitress was the most glamorous job in the world.) As I got older, I appreciated the rustic, family beach even more. It has a slow, laid back vibe that’s uncommon and special. We’ve spent a lot of time out there throughout our marriage and Jason, too, has fallen in love with this little seaside town.

So here’s how all this happened. A few weekends ago we decided to go to Edisto for Ty’s birthday.  My family beach house wasn’t available so we rented a condo on the river.  The view was amazing.  Marsh and river.  I’m not even going to try to describe it. Jason was unloading the car and during one of his trips upstairs, he mentions to me a sign hanging outside the elevator.  One of the condos was for rent year round and it was priced right for our budget . I called right then and set up an appointment to see it.  Either it would be perfect and we would go for it, or it wouldn’t work out, but at least I wouldn’t be wondering about it.  The condo was perfect for our family. Three bedrooms, close together. Two bathrooms, one off the master and one for potty training.  And it comes furnished so we are selling (almost) everything we own and going after a dream.

This dream chasing stuff is exciting and scary and full of the unknown.
In Jason’s mind, he sees the four of us holding hands and jumping.

 I like that.
We are blazing our own trail, but we are doing it together.

  1. Edisto is wonderful - my family vacations there, too. Great for kids, families - I hope it proves to be as perfect as it seems to be for your family. :)

  3. How wonderful! Visiting for the first time from Diana's...you are the envy of so many, taking a leap of faith. We did that a few years ago, sold everything we had and went as missionaries overseas. I had just turned 50. It was scary and exciting all at the same time. We thought it to be somewhat permanent but my health brought us back after a year and a half. :( But we still had a great adventure, met some wonderful people and hopefully touched some lives. God bless you and your family!!
